We caught up with him during the hectic week of CBC2016 and were lucky enough to check out his second restaurateur and brewery just outisde of Philly. Tune in to learn about Jean's favorite hop varieties and hear him pull a fast one on Augie. Also Ben Keene sits in in John Holl's stead. (Beer magazine editors -- they're essentially interchangeable.)

Remember, stay tuned next week for the third and final STB @ CBC16 episode!

Episode 58 - Fred Bueltmann, New Holland Brewing

Episode 58 - Fred Bueltmann, New Holland Brewing

Hey y'all! So we were down in Philly a couple of weeks ago for the 2016 Craft Brewers Conference (CBC) where we met up with some of our favorite brewers, both local and national. We recorded a series of three shows which we'll post over the next few weeks.

The first of those is this one with Fred Bueltmann, AKA the Beervangelist, of New Holland Brewing in Michigan. Fred's the personality behind New Holland and an outsize figure in craft beer community overall. We sat down with him in a tiny backroom at a bar in downtown Philly and recorded this noisy but awesome conversation.

Remember, stay tuned in the coming weeks for more STB @ CBC16 coverage!

Episode 57 - John Holl Goes to Cuba

Today we're talking to one of our own, Mr. John Holl. Our esteemed co-host used his fancy beer magazine journalism credentials to get into what has increasingly become a hot destination for Americans—Cuba. Traveling to Cuba is still rare though, especially among beer editors, so we decided to dedicate an entire episode to talking about what John found there. Tune in now to hear about Cuban's love for thumb-drives, adjunct lagers, and of course vintage American cars.

Episode 56 - Greg Avola, Untappd

We all know that Augie is an Untappd junkie, and today he and John Holl get to sit down with the social beer app's founder, Greg Avola. Avola tells about the early days (2010) of Untappd and how working within the craft beer community has shifted his palate from mass-market Mexican lagers to hoppy IPA's and sours. Greg picks a couple of beers from the Barcade draft selection to blind on the panel.

With John Holl and Justin Kennedy still recovering from the shenanigans of Hunahpu's Spring Break 2016 Spectacular®, Augie sits down with two of his brewers, Jeremy and Pete, to talk about Carton beers. Specifically what people are saying on Untappd.  We also read the latest transmissions from our prickly Pennsylvania pen pal, Seyser Koze.

Episode 51 - Wayne Wambles, Cigar City Brewing

Episode 51 - Wayne Wambles, Cigar City Brewing

For the second part of our Hunahpu's Spring Break 2016 Spectacular®, we talk with Wayne Wambles, head brewer of Cigar City Brewing in Tampa. Wayne is the original brewer for Cigar City. He's the guy that came up with Jai Alai and Hunahpu's and Maduro Brown and all those other CCB beers you love to love. He's also a real brewer's brewer so for this episode, we pretty much just let him talk for 35 minutes straight with minimal interruption from the STB panel.

Note that this episode was recorded two days prior to CCB announcing plans to sell the brewery to Fireman Capital Partners and merging with Oskar Blues and a couple of others under the United Craft Brews consortium. We weren't just being bad journalists—Wayne didn't mention it during our interview and of course we didn't know enough at the time to ask.

Episode 50 - Johnathan Wakefield, J. Wakefield Brewing

Episode 50 - Johnathan Wakefield, J. Wakefield Brewing

We traveled down to Florida a few days ago for Cigar City's Hunahpu's Day® 2016. The festival was a blast, and went off without a hitch this year. Right before the gates opened, we got a chance to sit out on the lanai with one of the Sunshine State's finest brewers, John Wakefield of J. Wakefield Brewing. It was a breezy morning as you can tell from the recording quality (we apologize in advance!) but we had a great conversation about the almighty Florida Weisse and Johnathan's instrumental role in its invention. We also talk about more Florida beer and some cool collaborations that John is working on with our neighbors in NYC.

This week we welcome Jerry Gnagy of Lousville's Against the Grain Brewery to the show for what's perhaps our most irreverent show yet. Episdoe FFC200 - Extreme Beer Festival with Firestone Walker & Foundation Brewing

In the first of our Extreme Beer Fest special episodes recorded live from the floor of the convention hall, we talk to Jeffers Richardson of Firestone Walker and Joel Mahaffey of Foundation Brewing.

Jeffers was the original brewmaster for Firestone. After taking a sojourn to work at Sierra Nevada, and later in the olive oil industry, he recently returned to the company as head of Barrelworks, Firestone's wild and sour facility in Buellton.

Joel is the co-founder of Foundation Brewing in Portland, Maine. He tells us about running an upstart brewery in one of the best beer cities in the country and how the brewing community along Industrial Way (which currently includes Allagash, Bissell Brothers, and Austin Street) fosters cooperation and creativity.

Boston's Trillium Brewing is one of the hottest East Coast breweries at the moment, focusing on big, hoppy beers like Fort Point & Upper Case and roasty imperial stouts like PM Dawn. We sat down with Trillium's co-founder JC Tetreault while we were in Boston a couple weeks ago for Beer Advocate's Extreme Beer Festival to talk beer, brewing, and all things Boston.

Episode 44 - Doug Reiser & Tim Gormley, Burial Beer Co.

When two-thirds of Asheville's Burial Beer Co. paid a visit to New York City a few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to get them on the mics to talk shop for about an hour. We discussed the reason for their visit (collaborations with Other Half and Transmitter) and asked how they stand out in a scene as crowded as the one in Asheville. We also got our good friend Josh Bernstein to sit in for the sometimes absent John Holl
